Rose Bloom & Balance
Cleansing Face Oil
An oil-to-milk botanical cleanser that dissolves makeup, SPF, and the day's impurities — without ever stripping, drying, or disrupting the lipid barrier the rest of your ritual depends on.

In Short
Rose Bloom & Balance is an oil-to-milk botanical cleanser built around ten cold-pressed plant oils — including jojoba (the closest botanical match to human sebum), prickly pear (the richest natural source of vitamin E), pomegranate, rosehip, and olive-derived squalane. It dissolves makeup, SPF, oxidised sebum, and particulate pollution by the principle of like-dissolves-like — without disrupting the lipid barrier or pH the rest of your ritual depends on.

The Philosophy
The first ritual.
The foundation step.
Most people overinvest in serums and underinvest in cleansing. But every active you apply afterwards is constrained by the surface it lands on.
A stripped, alkaline, microbially disrupted barrier cannot accept treatment — no matter how expensive. Rose Bloom & Balance is the foundation everything else is built on. Cleanse well, and the rest of the ritual works as designed.
The Transformation
The Oil-to-Milk Transformation
Three phases. One barrier-respectful cleanse.
Phase One
Oil.
Massaged onto dry skin, the oil phase dissolves makeup, SPF, oxidised sebum, and particulate pollution — by the principle of like-dissolves-like.
Phase Two
Milk.
Wet hands and continue massaging. The plant-derived emulsifiers activate, binding oil to water and visibly turning the formula into a milky emulsion that lifts everything away.
Phase Three
Rinse.
A final rinse with water carries the milk cleanly away — leaving the skin balanced, lipid-replete, and never tight.
The Science
Active Architecture
Ten botanical oils. Each chosen for what it adds to a cleanser that gives more than it takes away.
Plant-derived emulsifiers
Polyglyceryl-10 Oleate + Polyglyceryl-4 Oleate
Mechanism. Plant-derived non-ionic emulsifiers that allow the oil phase to bind with water on contact, transforming the formula from oil to milky emulsion. Far gentler than sulphate-based surfactants, with no disruption of the skin's lipid barrier or natural pH.
Outcome. Effortless rinse-off without stripping the barrier or leaving residue.
Jojoba
Simmondsia chinensis seed oil
Mechanism. Technically a liquid wax ester rather than an oil — the closest botanical match to human sebum. Dissolves like with like, lifting oxidised sebum, sunscreen, and makeup without disrupting the skin's own lipid composition.
Outcome. Deep, biocompatible cleansing that respects the skin's lipid layer.
Grape Seed Oil
Vitis vinifera seed oil
Mechanism. Linoleic-acid-rich (~70%) lipid with notable proanthocyanidin polyphenol content. Light molecular weight aids dispersion and rinse-off without surface residue.
Outcome. Lightweight cleansing with antioxidant carryover into the skin.
Prickly Pear Seed Oil
Opuntia ficus-indica seed oil
Mechanism. Contains the highest natural tocopherol (vitamin E) concentration of any plant seed oil, plus approximately 60% linoleic acid.
Outcome. Antioxidant defence even within a rinse-off cleansing step.
Squalane
Olive-derived Squalane
Mechanism. Mirrors the squalene molecule the skin naturally produces. Replenishes the lipid layer that even gentle cleansing inevitably disturbs.
Outcome. Leaves the skin lipid-replete, balanced, and never tight.
Camelina Oil
Camelina sativa seed oil
Mechanism. One of the highest natural sources of omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid in any plant oil, with documented anti-inflammatory activity.
Outcome. Calms reactivity and supports the lipid barrier through cleansing.
Argan Oil
Argania spinosa kernel oil
Mechanism. Rich in oleic and linoleic acids plus tocotrienols — a member of the vitamin E family with significantly greater antioxidant activity than tocopherol alone.
Outcome. Conditioning, antioxidant-rich nourishment that lingers after rinse.
Pomegranate Seed Oil
Punica granatum seed oil
Mechanism. One of the only natural sources of punicic acid — a conjugated omega-5 fatty acid with documented anti-inflammatory and lipid-membrane repair activity.
Outcome. Calming and barrier-supportive even within a cleansing formula.
Rosehip Seed Oil
Rosa canina seed oil
Mechanism. Linoleic-acid-rich lipid with naturally occurring trans-retinoic acid precursors — supplying the skin with retinoid-family nutrients in their native, non-irritating form.
Outcome. Texture refinement and tone support — even from a rinse-off product.
Damask Rose
Rosa damascena flower wax + extract
Mechanism. Steam-distilled wax containing the essential oils of Damask rose. Provides Aphora's signature aromatic identity and the emotional ritual of evening cleansing.
Outcome. Aromatic sensory closure and gentle skin softening.
The Comparison
Botanical Cleansing Oil vs Conventional Cleanser
Two approaches to cleansing. One supports the barrier. The other fights it.
| Rose Bloom & Balance | Foaming / Gel Cleanser | |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanism | Like-dissolves-like (lipid solvent) | Surfactant-based stripping |
| Removes makeup & SPF | Yes, in one step | Often requires double cleansing |
| Skin pH after use | Maintained (~5) | Frequently disrupted (alkaline) |
| Barrier impact | Supports the lipid layer | Strips natural oils |
| Tightness after | None | Common |
| Sensitive skin | Yes — calming and biocompatible | Often irritating |
The Method
Dry Skin First. It Matters.
The 20–30 second dry massage is when the work actually happens. Oil dissolves oil — and if you wet your face first, the emulsifiers activate prematurely. The milk phase begins before the oils have had time to dissolve oxidised sebum, oil-soluble makeup, and SPF.
Apply to dry skin. Take your time. Only add water at the very end to begin the rinse phase. This is the difference between a cleanse that works and one that simply moves things around.

At Aphora Botanicals
A cleanser should give
more than it takes away.
We formulated Rose Bloom & Balance because the cleanser is the most underestimated step in skincare. Most people accept the tightness of a foaming wash as the price of being clean. We don't.
Built on the principle of like-dissolves-like, this is a cleansing oil that respects what the skin already has — its lipid layer, its pH, its barrier function — while removing everything it should not be carrying. The result is skin that feels balanced, never stripped. Calm, never reactive. Ready, never raw.
Made for those who recognise the difference.
The Ritual
How to Use
- One
Apply to dry skin.
Dispense a coin-sized amount into clean, dry hands.
- Two
Massage for 20–30 seconds.
Work in slow, circular motions across the face and neck. This is when the oils dissolve makeup, SPF, and oxidised sebum.
- Three
Wet your hands.
Continue massaging as the formula transforms into a delicate milky emulsion.
- Four
Rinse cleanly.
Splash with water until the milk lifts away. Pat dry. Follow with Rose Tonic Mist while the skin is still damp.

Questions
What People Ask About Rose Bloom & Balance
Yes. Oil cleansers operate on the principle of like-dissolves-like — the lipid-soluble components of makeup, sunscreen, oxidised sebum, and particulate pollution dissolve into the oil phase rather than being scrubbed or stripped away. A 20–30 second massage on dry skin is enough to lift even waterproof mascara and high-SPF sunscreens. There is no need for a separate makeup remover or a second cleanse.
Not when the oils are chosen carefully. The misconception comes from heavy, oleic-acid-dominant oils that can sit on the skin and trap impurities. Rose Bloom & Balance is built around a balance of jojoba (a wax ester that mimics sebum), grape seed and prickly pear (linoleic-acid-rich, non-comedogenic), and squalane (mirrors human sebum). All of these are well-tolerated by oily, combination, and acne-prone skin types — and crucially, they fully rinse away thanks to the plant-derived emulsifiers in the formula.
The formula contains plant-derived polyglyceryl emulsifiers (Polyglyceryl-10 Oleate and Polyglyceryl-4 Oleate). On dry skin, these sit dormant, allowing the lipid phase to dissolve oxidised sebum, makeup, and SPF. When water is added, the emulsifiers activate and bind the oil to the water — visibly turning the formula into a milky emulsion. This is the moment everything you have just cleansed gets lifted away. A final rinse carries it cleanly off the skin, with no surface residue.
Yes. The misconception that oily skin should avoid oil is one of the most stubborn myths in skincare. In fact, oily skin is often producing excess sebum precisely because it has been over-stripped by harsh cleansers — and adding linoleic-acid-rich oils (like grape seed and prickly pear, both in this formula) has been shown in research to actually help regulate sebum production over time. Rose Bloom & Balance is suitable for all skin types, including oily and combination.
The 20–30 second dry massage is when the work actually happens. Oil dissolves oil — and if you wet your face first, the emulsifiers activate prematurely and the milk phase begins before the oils have had time to dissolve oxidised sebum, oil-soluble makeup, and SPF. Apply to dry skin, take your time massaging, and only add water at the end to begin the rinse phase. This is the difference between a cleanse that works and one that simply moves things around.
Rose Bloom & Balance is the foundation step — the first ritual. Everything that follows is only as effective as the surface it lands on. After cleansing, follow with Rose Tonic Mist to reset the skin's pH and prime it for treatment. Then PROTECT (AM) or RECOVERY (PM) as your active treatment layer. Finally, Lumé Deep Hydration Face Cream to seal the full ritual. Each step is designed to amplify the next.
