In Short
A solid cleansing bar designed for the face. Cold-pressed olive, coconut, shea, castor, and jojoba form the cleansing base — they dissolve oil-soluble debris through lipid compatibility, not surfactant aggression. Bakuchi, sea buckthorn, and rosehip layer in active botanical performance: renewal, antioxidant defence, tone support. White kaolin and aloe vera add gentle daily exfoliation. Cleansed skin that still feels like skin.

Why a Solid Bar
Cleansing
without compromise.
Most facial cleansers rely on synthetic surfactants — SLS, SLES, cocamidopropyl betaine — to dissolve oil and create foam. Those surfactants are effective, but they strip the acid mantle and disrupt the lipid barrier that the skin spends overnight rebuilding.
A cold-pressed oil bar cleanses through chemical compatibility instead. Plant oils have a similar lipid profile to human sebum and the environmental film that accumulates on the skin — they dissolve oil-soluble debris gently and rinse cleanly. The barrier stays intact.
The Science
Active Architecture
Six botanical actives, each selected for measurable performance — cleansing layer, renewal layer, comfort layer.
Bakuchi Oil
Psoralea corylifolia
Mechanism. A plant-derived alternative to retinol with documented activity on cell turnover and fine-line softening — but without the photosensitivity, dryness, or barrier disruption that conventional retinoids cause.
Outcome. Daily renewal support during cleansing — not just removal, but a small forward step every wash.
Sea Buckthorn Fruit Oil
Hippophae rhamnoides
Mechanism. One of the highest natural sources of omega-7 palmitoleic acid and carotenoids (lycopene, beta-carotene). Calms inflammation and protects against oxidative stress.
Outcome. A bar that doesn't just clean — it leaves the skin actively defended against the day's oxidative load.
Rosehip Seed Oil
Rosa canina
Mechanism. Rich in linoleic acid and trans-retinoic acid precursors. Long studied for its effects on skin tone, elasticity, and scar visibility.
Outcome. Tone evening and elasticity support over weeks of consistent daily use.
Jojoba Oil
Simmondsia chinensis
Mechanism. A liquid wax whose molecular structure matches human sebum almost exactly. Cleanses oil-soluble debris by mimicking the skin's own lipid — no disruption to barrier chemistry.
Outcome. Skin that feels clean but never tight. The opposite of squeaky-stripped.
Shea Butter
Vitellaria paradoxa
Mechanism. Phytosterol-rich plant butter that buffers the cleanse, leaving a fine, breathable lipid film on the skin's surface that prevents moisture loss during rinsing.
Outcome. Cleansed skin that retains its softness rather than losing it.
White Kaolin Clay
Kaolin clay
Mechanism. A naturally occurring mineral clay with mild adsorptive properties. Gently lifts surface debris and excess sebum without the stripping action of harsher clays.
Outcome. Pore-line clarity without the barrier compromise of stronger detoxifying clays.
Setting the Record Straight
Cleansing Bar Myths vs The Science
| The Myth | The Science |
|---|---|
| “Bar soap dries out your face” | True of detergent-based bars (SLS, SLES). Cold-pressed oil bars cleanse through lipid compatibility, not surfactant action — they don't strip the acid mantle. |
| “You need separate cleansers for AM and PM” | A well-formulated bar does both. AM removes overnight sebum; PM removes makeup, sunscreen, and pollution. Same chemistry, different inputs. |
| “Bakuchi is just "natural retinol" hype” | Multiple published trials show comparable efficacy to retinol on fine lines and cell turnover, without the photosensitivity, dryness, or barrier impact. Real science, not hype. |
| “Clay-based cleansers are too aggressive for daily use” | Kaolin (white clay) is the gentlest cosmetic clay grade. At the small concentration in this bar, it offers daily mild exfoliation without the stripping action of bentonite or French green clays. |

At Aphora Botanicals
The cleanse should serve
the skin, not punish it.
Most modern cleansers are too aggressive. The "squeaky clean" feeling people associate with effective washing is actually the sound of a disrupted barrier — sebum stripped, lipids removed, pH knocked off-balance. The skin then spends hours trying to recover.
We formulated this bar around a different question: what if the cleanse itself was where the skin received its first layer of actives? Bakuchi for renewal, sea buckthorn for defence, rosehip for tone. A wash that contributes rather than extracts.
Made for those who recognise the difference.
The Ritual
How to Use
- One
Wet your hands and the bar.
Warm water is best — opens the pore-line gently. Don't soak the bar; just moisten it.
- Two
Lather between your hands.
Gently massage the bar between your palms for ~10 seconds to build a soft, creamy lather. The kaolin clay gives the lather its slight ivory tint.
- Three
Apply to damp skin in slow circles.
Massage across face and neck for 30–60 seconds. Spend extra time around the nose and chin where pore-line debris accumulates. Avoid the immediate eye contour — use Eye + Temple Contour for that area.
- Four
Rinse thoroughly with warm water.
Splash until the lather is gone and your skin feels comfortable. Pat dry — don't rub. Follow with Rose Tonic Mist and your day or night oil.
What's Not in the Bar
Clean by formulation, not by claim.

Questions
What People Ask About the Facial Bar
Yes — designed for daily use, morning and evening. The cold-pressed oil base means no harsh surfactants; the kaolin clay is gentle enough for daily exfoliation without irritation. For sensitive or barrier-compromised skin, start once a day in the evening and add the morning cleanse after a week.
No — and that's the whole point of the formulation. Conventional soap bars rely on sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) or similar harsh detergents that strip the acid mantle and disrupt the lipid barrier. This bar uses cold-pressed olive, coconut, shea, castor, and jojoba as the cleansing base — they dissolve oil-soluble debris by chemical compatibility, not surfactant aggression. Most users describe their skin as feeling soft and comfortable after rinsing, never tight.
Different formats for different rituals. The Rose Bloom & Balance Cleansing Face Oil is liquid, oil-to-milk emulsifying when massaged with water — ideal for melting off heavy makeup or sunscreen. The Facial Bar is solid, foaming through agitation — faster for a morning cleanse or a lighter evening wash. Some users alternate them; some prefer one. Both respect the barrier in the same way.
No — that's the key advantage of Bakuchi (also called Bakuchiol) over conventional retinol. Published research consistently shows comparable activity on cell turnover and fine lines without the photosensitivity that retinol introduces. You can use this bar in the morning without needing to wait or worry about sun exposure.
With daily morning and evening use, a single bar lasts approximately 6–10 weeks depending on lather technique. To extend its life, keep the bar on a draining soap dish (not sitting in water) — the oils degrade much faster if the bar stays wet between uses.
Bakuchi has not been formally tested in pregnancy and many practitioners advise erring conservatively. If you're pregnant or trying to conceive, we'd recommend using the Rose Bloom & Balance Cleansing Face Oil (Bakuchi-free) for that period and returning to this bar afterwards.
